Within the endless movement of Nature, you encounter stillness. And the other way around.
When you sit in a forest and observe what is happening around you, your first thought may be, “Nothing.” And yet, if you look a little closer, nothing is truly still. Rivers flow effortlessly, ants tirelessly gather food, thousands of insects build nests, hunt, and explore. Seeds quietly work their way underground toward the surface, and birds sing the song of Life. Everything moves with an almost silent rhythm, carrying a melody that no human being can naturally imitate anymore.
Recently, I was introduced to the beauty of Forest Bathing. In Japanese, where the practice originated, it is called “Shinrin-yoku”, and its ideogram carries a beautiful symbolism: 森林浴. To us in the West, it may look like nothing more than a sketch made of lines, but the characters are composed of the symbols for trees placed side by side, together with the character for water, symbolizing “allowing the whole forest to bathe every part of your being”.
In essence, it is a mindfulness experience in Nature during which you simply are. You walk, observe, and breathe, leaving behind the worries and tension of everyday life.
Research conducted in Japan exploring the preventive benefits of this practice found improvements in participants’:
immune system function through increased activity of natural killer (NK) cells, a marker that is being studied for its potential role in immune defense.
cardiovascular health, contributing to lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of coronary artery disease.
respiratory health, with beneficial effects on allergies and respiratory conditions.
symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.
mental relaxation and concentration, with potential benefits even for individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
feelings of awe, gratitude, and selflessness (Hansen et al., 2017).
Perhaps, after all, we seek in coffee, supplements, and other quick fixes a little of the energy and peace that Nature can offer us in a much more genuine way.
Just remember the last time you stood in a green landscape, alone, surrounded by existence itself. That feeling may has a scientific explanation, but what truly matters is how you felt. And how you will feel there again.
“We love being out in nature because it has no opinion about us.”
Friedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher (1844–1900)
It is fascinating that people who spend time in Nature show lower levels of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. A systematic review by Antonelli et al. (2019), which examined studies on the effects of Forest Bathing on cortisol levels, found that most studies showed that simply spending time in (or even looking at) a forest is more relaxing than being in an urban environment. Even anticipating a visit to Nature or mentally imagining one contributes to a greater sense of calm.
That is something I deeply understand, because I never want to come back whenever I find myself far away from the grey of the city and its cold concrete.
Nature does not care who you are. And that alone is such a liberating feeling that it immediately signals the nervous system to relax. Because you are safe! You may be carrying the weight of the entire world on your shoulders, and you may possess every oddity ever recorded in the history of humanity. Yet to the Great Mother, you are simply one more of her beloved children, a creature like every other. She will not single you out, judge you, or ask you to prove anything in order to be accepted. She simply waits for all of us to lose ourselves in her green embrace and place our burdens into her hands.
Perhaps we do not go into the forest to meet Nature after all, but to remember who we are. And there is no better way than through free expression.
“No work of nature is inferior to art, for the arts merely imitate nature.”
Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor (121–180 AD)
Art therapy, when combined with the healing qualities of Nature, can improve mental health and enhance cognitive functioning, providing fertile ground for healing psychological trauma. More specifically, creativity and artistic expression reduce anxiety, depression, and aggression, strengthen social relationships, support the grieving process, and foster environmental awareness together with a more responsible relationship with Nature (Gulbe et al., 2025).
You don’t have to be Monet to make art. Whether you are tending your garden and planting a tomato vine, painting, or collecting stones, leaves, and branches and arranging them into shapes that make sense to you—or maybe don’t!—you can spend some time in a nearby park, simply letting yourself be, attuning yourself to the Whole that exists around you and within you.
There are so many ways to step outside and enjoy the benefits of returning to our natural environment. Ecotherapy, exercising in Nature (from running, cycling, swimming, yoga, and Pilates to more vigorous forms of physical activity), reading, picnics, photography, hiking. Whatever fills your Soul and makes you not want to return home or back to work, that is your path.
You don’t have to go far.
You only have to go.
“Nature never hurries, yet everything is accomplished.”
Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher (6th century BC)
If you want to be a little more Wild and Free in this world, give some time to your Soul’s longing. Give your day a chance. Find the closest trail to you and follow it—barefoot or not. And let me know how you felt!
Until the next time,
